SAFETY FIRST

Gas work is not something you trust to anyone

Improper gas work kills. It is that simple. NYC requires licensed master plumbers for all gas line work — and for good reason. A bad connection, an untested joint, or an unpermitted line puts lives at risk.

You smell gas

That rotten-egg smell means a leak — don't hunt for it yourself. Call our 24/7 emergency gas response now.

New appliance needs gas

A range, boiler, water heater, dryer, or generator needs a sized line run, tested, permitted, and inspected.

Con Ed shut your gas off

A Con Ed violation killed your service — you need repairs, permits, and a passed DOB inspection to restore it.

Restaurant build-out gas

Ranges, ovens, and fryers need a line from the meter sized for the full BTU load with no pressure drop.

01

Assessment & Sizing

We assess your needs, calculate total BTU demand, determine the right pipe size, and plan the route. For emergencies, we dispatch immediately.

02

Permit & Install

We pull the DOB permit, run the gas line with approved materials, make all connections to manufacturer spec, and pressure test every joint.

03

Test & Inspect

We pressure test the entire system, verify zero leaks, and schedule the DOB inspection. We are present for the inspection and handle any questions the inspector has.

FAQ

Questions We Hear Every Day

Important answers about gas line work in NYC.

In New York City, gas line installation and repair must be performed by a licensed master plumber. Gas piping falls under the NYC Fuel Gas Code and the Administrative Code, which assign exclusive authority to master plumbers holding a DOB license. The work also requires a DOB gas piping permit and, for new service or upsized capacity, a Con Edison gas authorization. Unlicensed gas line work is illegal and can void building insurance coverage.

Local Law 152 requires periodic inspection of all gas piping within NYC buildings — including exposed piping in basements, boiler rooms, and public corridors — by a licensed master plumber. The inspection cycle is every four years, staggered by community district. The plumber visually inspects piping for corrosion, improper fittings, and unsupported runs, then files a report with the DOB. Buildings that fail or miss the deadline face DOB violations and potential gas service shutoff by Con Edison.

Natural gas in NYC is odorized with mercaptan — a rotten-egg or sulfur smell. If you detect that odor, leave the building without operating any electrical switches, open flames, or elevators, then call Con Edison's emergency line from outside. Do not attempt to locate or seal the gas line leak yourself. Additional signs include a hissing sound near piping, dead vegetation above buried lines, or a gas meter running with all appliances off.

A new commercial gas line installation in NYC starts with a load calculation to size the pipe for all appliances at full demand, then a DOB permit application filed by a licensed master plumber. The plumber installs black-iron or CSST piping from the meter to each appliance connection, pressure-tests the entire gas line at 1.5 times working pressure, and coordinates the final Con Edison inspection and meter activation. NYC also requires seismic shut-off valves in some commercial applications.

CSST — Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing — is a flexible gas line material approved for use in NYC under the Fuel Gas Code, provided it is bonded per code to protect against lightning-induced arc damage. It's commonly used for equipment connections and through-wall drops where rigid black-iron piping is impractical. NYC DOB requires CSST installations to follow manufacturer bonding specifications and be filed under a master plumber's permit. Some co-op and condo boards prohibit CSST in shared chases; confirm house rules before specifying.
